Sunday, August 3, 2025 | Maroon Bells Scenic Area
Want to give back to Aspen in the most rewarding way possible? Spend a morning caring for one of the most stunning spots on Earth—and celebrate three decades of Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers while you’re at it.
On Sunday, August 3, RFOV is hosting a special 30th anniversary trail stewardship event at the Maroon Bells Scenic Area, and it’s the kind of day that locals don’t just talk about—they show up for.
A Big Birthday in the Best Spot
If you’ve ever stood at Maroon Lake at sunrise, you know: it’s magic. But behind the pristine postcard views is a delicate ecosystem, one that needs care as trail use and visitation climb. That’s where RFOV comes in.
For 30 years, Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers has quietly shaped the valley’s trail systems—Hunter Creek, Smuggler, Cathedral Lake, and beyond—rallying locals, visitors, and outdoor lovers around a shared cause: protecting the places we all love to explore.
What to Expect on August 3
🛠️ Trail Work, the Local Way
The Maroon Bells trail is relatively flat, but there’s always work to be done: erosion control, light tread repair, and helping keep the area safe and sustainable for the season ahead. Tools and direction provided—you just bring your energy.
☀️ Early Light, Fewer Crowds
Want the best light and the calmest trails? Catch the first shuttles from Rubey Park, starting at 4:00 AM. Most volunteers aim to be at the Bells by 6:00 or 7:00 AM—it’s quiet, beautiful, and the moose tend to beat the crowds.
🦫 Wildlife & Scenic Surprises
Post-volunteering, wander the far side of the lake—where you might spot a beaver dam, wild berries, or even a black bear foraging in the distance. (Quiet footsteps encouraged!)
🎉 An Organic Celebration
No swag bags, no bells and whistles—just a strong sense of community. Think high-fives, trail stories, and a well-earned moment of gratitude. Many locals head to Aspen Tap or Buck’s Coffee afterward to unwind with something cold or something warm.
Who Shows Up?
Everyone. We’ve seen retirees, families, trail runners, outdoor guides, and visitors who joined on the spot after seeing a trail crew in action. RFOV’s vibe is welcoming, community-driven, and refreshingly unpolished. No ego, just shared effort.
How to Prepare Like a Local
- Dress for everything: It may be sunny, but mountain mornings get chilly and afternoon storms can roll in quickly. Layer up, wear closed-toed shoes, and bring a hat and sunscreen.
- Pack your own snacks and water: RFOV keeps things lean and local—the reward is in the work, not the freebies.
- Know your limits: Even flat trails feel different at altitude. Take breaks, hydrate, and don’t hesitate to slow down.
Why It’s Worth It
The Maroon Bells are Aspen’s crown jewel—but they’re also a reminder that beauty needs care. Volunteering with RFOV isn’t just about trail work. It’s about giving back to a place that’s given so much to all of us—one stone, one step, one sunrise at a time.
